No matter how virtuous your intentions at the grocery store might be, as you are subtly subjected to the pictures of happy folks eating calorie, fat, sugar, and cholesterol laden foods, you simply cannot resist! Add to this the fact that much of what is considered to be healthy truly tastes little better than you might imagine the box it came in might taste, and it is not surprising that in the evening you do not settle down with a low fat, low sugar, and low cholesterol rice cake but instead snack down on chocolate covered nuts and other goodies.
In the meantime, Americans are becoming more overweight, and also unhealthier because of the food choices that are made on a daily basis. Many suffer from adult onset diabetes, heart disease, narrowing of arteries, find that moving is becoming harder and harder to do, and before long many will die sooner than they should have to - simply because they failed to exercise their ability to choose healthy foods.
Morbid obesity, adult onset diabetes, heart disease, liver disease, kidney failure, and a cornucopia of other problems have been associated with high blood sugar, high cholesterol, high fat and salt contents in the diet, and of course a lack of exercise. Fortunately, you do not have to accept defeat but instead go on the offensive with the very foods that in the past might have made you sick!
Did you know that the top cholesterol-lowering foods also help control high blood sugar and lower the overall incidents of adult onset diabetes (type two diabetes)? Here is a list of the top five food choices:
- Dairy used to be considered an enemy, since it came in the guise of high fat, high sugar and high cholesterol laden milk, ice cream, and other similar food offerings. No more! You can now enjoy all the goodness of calcium laden milk in high quality ice cream while enjoying the variety that has no sugar added!
- Dessert always used to mean fatty baklava and other honey dripping offerings, but with the advent of fat free, sugar free chocolate puddings, dessert is now a healthy snap and keeps the high blood sugar at bay.
- Buy fruits and veggies by color; the more colorful, the sweeter the item. While it may do little to overcome the candy craving, snacking on a ripe red bell paper may quite possibly assuage some of that craving without causing a spike in your blood sugar levels.
- Eggs used to be considered healthy, but experts have found that the use of egg substitutes is safer for those suffering from high blood sugar and high cholesterol.
- Last but not least, opt for healthy drinks. Water is best, but unsweetened fruit juice — preferably organic with no sugar added — comes in as second best.
While these tasty alternatives may not cure your diabetes or treat it as well as diabetes insulin, they will go a long way to preventing any spikes in high blood sugar, help with keeping the sugar levels even, and of course also contribute to the overall health of your body. Since this might get you moving about a lot more, the much needed exercise will have a positive effect!
